Fermentation readings form
Your fermentation reading form is the form you fill in when recording a reading against a batch, either from the batch's Analysis tab or from the production dashboard. You control which readings appear on it, which of them are compulsory, and the units they are recorded in, at Settings -> Production settings -> Fermentation readings form.
The reading types available
Breww supports a long list of reading types. Gravity, vessel temperature, vessel temperature 2, vessel set temperature and pH are listed first, followed by the rest in alphabetical order: apparent density (steel), bitterness, cell count, CO₂, colour, conductivity, diacetyl test, dissolved oxygen, haze, haze percentage, N₂, observations, pressure, sulphur, titratable acidity and VDK.
Each one is a row on the settings page with three columns you can change.
Show reading form
Tick this to have the reading type appear on your fermentation reading form. Untick it to hide it.
Out of the box, Breww shows Gravity, pH, Vessel temperature and Observations, and hides everything else. Turn on whichever extras your brewery records.
Hiding a reading type does not delete anything you have already recorded. A batch's Analysis tab shows every reading type you have chosen to show here, plus any reading type that has actually been recorded on that batch, so historic readings for a type you have since hidden are still visible.
Require reading if shown
Tick this to make the reading compulsory whenever the form is filled in. Anyone recording a reading will not be able to save it until that field has a value.
By default only Gravity is required. This is worth thinking about carefully: if you make several readings compulsory, a quick check on the tank floor becomes a longer job, and people may end up entering placeholder values just to save the form.
Gravity cannot be hidden if any of your drink types calculate their duty ABV from fermentation readings (the Automatically calculated from fermentation readings option in your duty settings). In that case the checkbox is locked on, because Breww needs the gravity readings to work out the ABV. To unlock it, change the ABV calculation method first.
Unit of measurement
For reading types that are measured, this chooses the unit the reading is entered and displayed in, for example specific gravity or degrees Plato for gravity, and Celsius or Fahrenheit for temperature. The unit you pick also determines the sensible range and number of decimal places Breww will accept for that reading.
Breww picks a sensible starting unit for you, and breweries with a US address start with Fahrenheit for temperatures rather than Celsius.
Two reading types, Observations and Diacetyl test, are free text rather than a measurement, so they have no unit and show a dash in this column.
The unit chosen for Gravity is used more widely than just the reading form. It is also the gravity unit used on your recipes and brew sheets, and in exported Breww recipe files.
Saving your changes
Change as many rows as you need and then select Save batch reading settings at the bottom of the page. The changes take effect immediately, on both the web app and the Breww mobile app.
