Planning multi-day delivery runs with overnight rests

Some deliveries are too far away to reach and get back from in a single day. For these, you can plan a multi-day run: the vehicle sets off with its load, stops overnight somewhere such as a truck stop, and carries on delivering the next day. You add an overnight rest for each night the vehicle is away, and Breww plans one run that spans every day of the trip.

Before you start

Multi-day runs work best when the vehicle's limits are set up, as Breww uses them to decide how much fits into each day:

• On the vehicle's profile, set the Driver hours and driver break. Presets are available for common driving rules. See Use Vehicle Profiles to further customise delivery routing.
• On the vehicle itself, set its Size and weight, so it's routed as a truck where needed. See Setting up delivery vehicles.

How a trip is organised

A trip belongs to the date the vehicle sets off. Schedule every delivery, uplift and stop for the trip on that first date, from the same site, and add the overnight rests to that date too. When Breww optimises the date, it spreads the drops across the days of the trip.

A vehicle with one overnight rest is planned over two days, a vehicle with two overnight rests over three days, and so on. Arrival times on later days are shown with the number of days ahead, such as "10:15 +1 day".

Adding an overnight rest

1. Go to Deliveries and open the date the trip sets off.
2. Choose Actions -> Add a stop/visit.
3. Set Stop type to Overnight rest.
4. Fill in the fields below, then select Add stop.

• Date - the date the trip sets off, not the night of the rest.
• Vehicle - the vehicle that stays overnight.
• Night number - which night of the trip this is. Leave it blank to add the vehicle's next night.
• Minimum rest - the shortest rest the driver needs before setting off again. Leave it blank to use the Minimum daily rest from the vehicle's profile, or 11 hours if the profile doesn't have one.
• Address - where the vehicle stays overnight.
• Notes - anything the driver needs to know, such as parking instructions.
• Site the run departs from - the site the trip starts from.

Add one overnight rest for each night. A vehicle can have one trip per date and site, so its nights are numbered 1, 2, 3 and so on. To change the order of the nights, edit a rest and change its Night number; the other nights are renumbered to make room.

The overnight rests card

Overnight rests for the date are listed in their own Overnight rests card on the delivery date page. For each rest you'll see the vehicle and night, the address, the rest times once the trip has been planned (or the minimum rest before then), and the run it's on. A rest that hasn't been planned yet shows a Not on a run yet badge.

Use the pencil button to edit a rest and the delete button to remove it. You can't edit or delete a rest once its run is locked.

Optimising a multi-day trip

Optimise the date as usual. For each vehicle with overnight rests, Breww plans a single run across the days of the trip:

• Each day ends at that night's overnight rest address. The next day starts at the vehicle's usual start time (the Earliest run start time on its profile, or your default run start time), or later if that's needed to give the driver at least the minimum rest.
• Each day gets its own driver break, and its own limits for driving time, working time and time on duty, taken from the vehicle's profile. This includes a day with no drops that's spent driving from one overnight rest to the next.
• Customer delivery windows are respected on whichever day a drop lands.
• The vehicle doesn't return to reload during the trip, so Allow calculating multiple runs per vehicle (when required) is switched off for the optimisation, and Breww tells you so.
• The whole trip's load has to fit in the vehicle. If the first plan is over the vehicle's weight capacity, Breww plans the trip again with the load spread across its days. Any drop that no longer fits is left off the run, and Breww tells you which. If the trip is still over capacity, Breww warns you to check the load before the vehicle sets off.

Breww also tells you when an overnight rest is left out, for example because its vehicle wasn't included in the optimisation, or because nothing could be planned for that vehicle.

Optimising never deletes your overnight rests. If the date is optimised without the Advanced Deliveries addon, the overnight rests are taken off their runs, and Breww tells you so.

Changing a multi-day run

• Reordering drops - drag the drops into the order you'd like. The overnight rests have to stay in night order, so night 1 comes before night 2, and so on. Reverse order isn't available for a run with overnight rests, as each day's drops belong to that day.
• Re-optimising part-way through a trip - if some drops have already been completed, Breww plans the rest of the trip from where the driver is, leaving the nights they've already passed in place.
• Moving the run to another date - the whole trip moves, overnight rests included. You can't move it to a date where the same vehicle already has overnight rests from the same site. Choose another date, or remove the other trip's overnight rests first.

Overnight rests in the Breww app

In the Breww app, an overnight rest is listed on the driver's run as a break titled Overnight rest, with its rest times once the trip has been planned. Overnight rests don't need marking as complete.
